What are we trying to achieve

Introduction

One of the world’s greatest challenges today is the management of waste. Every living human being, man, woman, and child are, to some degree, producing waste every day of their lives. As the world’s population grows, so do the challenges of managing the ever-increasing volumes and complexities of waste. Conventional management systems have clearly become overwhelmed to an extent that has finally attracted world-wide attention from governments which appear prepared to ban, tax or onerously regulate any activity or thing that could be associated with contributing to the degradation of the environment. Sound decision making is frequently confounded by vested interests, ignorance, biased science, media hype, and fake news, Nonetheless, the future is promising:

“The environmental industry will provide one of the biggest ever opportunities for enterprise and technical innovation that the industrial world has yet seen. It will create profits, trade surpluses, employment, technological advances, as well as environmental protection, for those countries whose companies win the new environmental markets.”

(The Environmental Industries Commission Ltd. UK)

We plan to establish a web presence under the tag line “What are we trying to achieve” (WAWTTA.com). Initially, the focus will be on the environmental interests and concerns of primary beverage container stakeholders in New Brunswick. Long term we hope this will evolve into “An altruistic and visionary approach to managing post-consumer packaging.”

What better place to start from than the established network of New Brunswick’s Redemption Centres with their experienced owners and operators who understand, better than anyone else, the real challenges at the early stages in the recycling process. We have been monitoring the operation of the Beverage Containers Program for several years and have become aware of a number of opportunities for improvement from our own observations and also from discussions with owners and operators. Clearly the internet provides the ideal forum where collective ideas and views on specific issues can be discussed, prioritized and acted upon.

Initial funding for this endeavour has been secured and the service is free. Longer-term, it is anticipated that operating costs will be covered through donations from those who appreciate the resulting value and benefits.

The long-term goal is very ambitious, but “everybody knows” that much needs to be done, and as a matter of urgency. We hope you will appreciate what we are attempting to achieve.
